Apple Pie Filling

A favorite neighbor, Kiyo Fukui, shared this recipe with us. There is absolutely no comparison between this recipe and the apple pie filling you can buy in a can. Once you try it, you’ll never go back!

Apple Pie Filling (Bottled or Frozen)

  • 4 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 t. cinnamon
  • 1 t. salt
  • 3 T. lemon juice
  • 1 c. cornstarch
  • 1 t. nutmeg
  • 10 c. water
  • 6 qts. apples cored, sliced, and peeled


  • Mix all ingredients except lemon juice and apples in a large pan. Cook until thick. Add lemon juice and apples. Stir well.
  • If processing, fill quart jars with mixture. Process 25 minutes in water bath.
  • If freezing, fill quart size freezer bags with mixture. Place in freezer. When ready to use mixture for pie, thaw and place in saucepan. Cook for 10 minutes on medium low setting to thicken and get rid of excess moisture.


This filling is also amazing when used in apple crisp and apple cobbler!
