Burn, Baby, Burn!

Did you know that fires are an essential tool in farmland management? Each spring, the farmers use controlled burns on the ditches and ditch banks to get them ready for the summer irrigation season.

Burning clears away old plants and weeds. This action helps to keep the precious water flowing in the irrigation ditches; and then, into the fields. The fires break down dead plant matter and release the nutrients into the soil. The burns also assist in weed and pest control.
